If you encounter a dental emergency, contact Centre West Dental immediately and one of our representatives will schedule you with the earliest available appointment. Based on a description of your symptoms, we’ll also offer practical advice that may prove useful in the interim. To this end, we’ve provided the following guide to common dental emergencies:
In the event of a toothache, contact your dentist immediately. While toothaches often pass with time, it is best to take a cautious approach. For instant pain relief, patients should consider taking the recommended dose of Advil or Tylenol.
If you notice swelling in your gum tissue, this may be the result of an infection. While minor infections can be resolved through a simple course of antibiotics, more serious inflammation may be the result of abscesses that require draining. In either case, contact your dentist immediately and schedule an appointment. Upon consultation, an appropriate course of action can be determined.
In the event that a crown or bridge becomes loose, it is critical that you conact your dentist as soon as possible. In order to prevent additional damage, attempt to keep your crown or bridge secure. In some cases, re-cementing is possible. In other cases, more extensive procedures may be required.
Broken dentures are not uncommon and quite easy to repair. Simply schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience and your dentist will gladly assist. Under no circumstances should you attempt to personally repair your dentures.
If you experience a tooth being knocked out, all attempts should be made to recover the tooth and clean it of any impurities. Avoid handling the root of the tooth for fear of damaging the fibers on its surface. In some cases it is possible to re-insert the tooth, though there is typically a 30 minute window for any potential success. If this proves unsuccessful, keep the tooth in a glass of cold milk and immediately contact our emergency dental services.
In the case of teeth that are pushed out of position (either inward or outward), attempt to realign them through the application of light pressure. Avoid forcing teeth into position for fear of causing more damage. Moist tissue and gauze can prove effective for holding teeth in place. Schedule an appointment with your dentist at your earliest convenience.
Teeth can be fractured in a variety of different ways. The appropriate treatment will depend entirely on the type of fracture you have incurred. Repairing a fractured tooth is often a simple procedure, but you should not delay in contacting your dentist. In the interim, if you experience any pain in the area of the fracture, refrain from eating hot or cold foods and avoid using the affected teeth for biting.
